For centuries, gilding has transformed interiors into luminous works of art, adding depth, brilliance, and symbolic meaning to some of the world’s most treasured spaces. At Canning, interior gilding remains one of the most expressive and enduring decorative finishes used to restore and uplift buildings of architectural, historic, and spiritual significance. Whether applied to ornate plasterwork, architectural moldings, or decorative ceilings, gilding brings a refinement and craftsmanship that few finishes can match.

Our new resource, the Art of Interior Gilding: A Guide To Understanding the Process, Materials & Expertise Needed, has recently posted to our site. In light of this new resource going public, we thought it would be most insightful to quickly delve into the importance of interior gilding for those who are beginning their craftsmanship journey or who are interested in this historic practice. Our new interior gilding guide goes more in depth about the intricacies of this practice, such as choosing the right materials, techniques, and expertise you should look for when partnering with a professional.

Interior Gilding: A Quick Summary

During Gilding Mellon Auditorium

During gilding process, applying gold leaf sheets to interior architectural details in the Mellon Auditorium.

Interior gilding is the process of applying thin sheets of metal, most commonly gold leaf, to interior architectural surfaces to create a luminous, refined finish. As a craft rooted deeply in tradition, gilding requires both artistic sensitivity and technical precision. Every project begins with a thorough assessment of the existing conditions, including substrate stability and any previous finishes, to ensure proper adhesion and aging of the new gilding. From meticulous surface preparation to the delicate process of laying each leaf, artisans rely on time-honored techniques that have been passed down for generations. The Importance of Gilding in Historic Spaces

The impact of gilding extends beyond its visual beauty. In sacred and ceremonial environments, gilding holds powerful symbolic meaning, often representing divinity, purity, and illumination. In theaters and performance halls, it evokes grandeur and elegance, while in civic buildings it communicates importance, prestige, and a sense of permanence. Thoughtfully applied gilding enhances architectural character by accentuating carvings, highlighting focal features, and restoring the original design of a space.

Interior Gilding

Interior gilding is commonly found on coffered ceilings, ornamental plaster, cornices, capitals, pilasters, decorative panels, friezes, altars, reredos, medallions, and sculptural reliefs. Each application is approached with careful consideration of the building’s history and intended use, ensuring that the final appearance complements and elevates the existing design.

In the context of historic preservation, a sensitive approach to gilding is crucial. Gold leaf not only replicates the appearance of original finishes but also maintains the integrity of the building’s craftsmanship and architectural intent. Our preservation-focused methodology ensures that materials align with historic substances, finishes meet conservation standards, and new work integrates seamlessly into the existing environment. This commitment helps protect and extend the life of historic interiors so that future generations can continue to appreciate their beauty.
